Public Classes

Due to Ballet Lab's production of Axeman Lullaby in the Chunky Move Studios there will be no public classes

Chunky Move Dance Classes are great for improving fitness and co-ordination. Classes are offered in CONTEMPORARY, BALLET, FUNK, BREAKDANCE and YOGA from beginner or intermediate levels and are a perfect way to unwind, get fit and extend flexibility and strength.

Classes run on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursday evenings from 6:15pm and Saturday mornings from 10:00am. Public Classes cost $16 per class. You can also purchase a Public Class Card for 11 classes at $160.

Classes are casual, so you do not have to sign up for a term, but pay as you go!

Action Moves for Kids Aged 6-10

In 2006 Action Moves will take a change in direction to become a school based touring program and will no longer be offered each Monday at the Chunky Move Studios.  We hope this re-structure will ensure the longevity of the program and provide a positive dance experience to many more children across Victoria.

Advanced Classes


Advanced Classes are designed for people who already have moderate to high dance experience. There are usually four Advanced Classes during the week and five when the Company is rehearsing. These classes are great for tertiary level dance students or professional dancers who wish to maintain peak performance and technique.

Classes are offered in Contemporary, Ballet, Yoga, Tai Chi and other techniques and are sometimes taught by international guest teachers.

Industry Classes cost $13 per class. You can also purchase an Industry Class Card for 10 classes for $110 - save $20!

Class Explanations

CONTEMPORARY
Contemporary dance borrows from jazz, ballet, funk, social dance styles and many modern dance styles of the 20th century. Contemporary dance encourages natural, spontaneous movement and personal interpretation. It focuses on self-expression, awareness of space and body movement, use of body weight, efficiency of muscle use and safe body alignment. Classes start with a comprehensive warm-up and gradually build up to more elaborate dance routines.

PILATES
Pilates is a system of body conditioning designed in the 1920s by physical trainer Joseph Pilates.  Some of the first people to use the Pilates method were dancers and it continues to be popular amongst dancers today.  Classes consist of energizing floor-based exercise routines designed to improve flexibility and strength without building bulk. You will be guided through a series of controlled movements that will help  you with your body alignment and strengthen and tone your abdominal and back muscles.

BALLET
Classical ballet is characterized by a standard vocabulary of steps, poses, and graceful movements including pointed feet, rising, jumping, stretching and spinning. It is strengthening, disciplined and stylised. The class starts with exercises at the barre followed by work in the centre of the floor. Classical ballet for adults is a great way of improving flexibility and coordination.


FUNK
Funk is the dance style you see on the latest music video clips. This fun and energetic class pumps its way through popular music and is a lively workout. A good place to start if you’re a beginner, the class begins with a warm-up and some stretching and then continues into some funky routines.


FUNK/HIP HOP
This class uses Funk with the addition of Hip Hop techniques such as popping, locking and breaking. Starting with a short warm-up, you are then taught isolation exercises which train you to move different parts of your body independently. A short choreographed routine is put together so that you can enjoy the freedom of dancing in a fun, aerobic and exhilarating style.

BREAK DANCE
Breakdancing originated in the Bronx in the mid 1970's allowing rival gangs to battle it out on the dance floor without any bloodshed. In this class you will learn all elements of Breakin' including Toprocs (funky upright dance steps before you hit the floor), Footwork (play between hands and feet on the floor), Freezes (balancing on hands and forearms with legs in the air) and Power Moves (spins, glides, air moves).

YOGA

This class provides an introduction to the asanas/postures of Hatha yoga. Moving with awareness and guided by the breath we will explore basic standing and seated postures, simple breathing exercises (pranayama) and meditation. By cultivating the movement of prana (energy) in the body, a more energised yet calm state of being is often experienced. Taught by pilates/yoga teacher and dancer Jo White.

ACTION MOVES
At Action Moves for boys, your child will enjoy energetic rhythmic combinations to music with special games and character-based tasks to stimulate his imagination. Specifically for boys aged 6 to 10, classes are designed to be fun and at the same time challenging to build stamina, strength, flexibility and coordination.
